Building Community, Strengthening Connections for Seniors

For more than four decades, the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) has fostered community in Seattle. Today, through its Social Connection Program, the PNA is addressing loneliness and isolation among older adults.

Since its founding in 1980, the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) has been a
vital gathering place in Seattle. It began when neighbors rallied together to save an old
elementary school from closure, transforming the building into a hub for connection,
learning, and support. Over the years, the PNA has grown into one of Seattle’s most
respected community organizations, serving thousands of individuals through programs
that range from preschool and after-school enrichment to community kitchens,
sustainability initiatives, and neighborhood events that bring people together.

But at its heart, the PNA has always been about people looking out for one another.
That spirit is powerfully alive in the Social Connection Program, which works to ensure
that older adults remain connected, supported, and engaged in their community. For
many seniors, retirement, mobility challenges, or the loss of a spouse can lead to
isolation. The program combats these challenges by offering social events, volunteer
companionship, resource referrals, and opportunities for older adults to contribute their
time and talents.

The impact is profound. Imagine a neighbor who has lost touch with friends and family,
suddenly finding joy again in weekly gatherings or conversations with a volunteer who
visits regularly. These connections provide not only companionship but also a
lifeline—reminding older adults that they are valued, seen, and deeply woven into the
fabric of their community.

Addressing loneliness is more than a matter of kindness; it is a matter of health.
Research has shown that chronic isolation can increase the risk of dementia,
depression, and physical decline, with effects as serious as smoking or obesity.

The Social Connection Program is tackling this head-on, building networks of care that
strengthen both individuals and the community.
At the JTMF Foundation, we are honored to support the PNA and its Social Connection
Program. Together, we are helping build a future where no one, regardless of age, faces
the burden of isolation and loneliness.
