Gilbert House Children’s Museum - Salem, Oregon

The Gilbert House Children’s Museum (GHCM) worked with MindSplash to develop a custom-made wind tunnel system. Visitors will learn about airflow by using the system of controls, pathways, and manipulatives of all shapes and sizes. The system, known as Airflow Alley, was created with the National Science Foundation to teach visitors of all ages about airflow. Airflow Alley combines larger-than-life air tubes, high-performance air systems, interactive diverter boxes, and soaring manipulatives into a powerful exhibit experience.

The Museum focuses on early intervention through fun, practical and physical aspects of math and science by designing exhibit rooms and outdoor areas that invite children to tinker, discover, and engage with their world. This type of play for young children has been shown to inspire curiosity and learning for girls and boys who will become interested in the math, science and engineering aspects of the world. It is anticipated that over half a million visitors will experience Airflow Alley while visiting GHCM! Similar systems are in almost 100 museums and science-centers throughout the country.

The JTMF Foundation hopes children of all ages will enjoy and be inspired by this exhibit for years to come.
