Dolly Parton's Imagination Library (DPIL) is transforming the lives of young children by making early literacy accessible to every family, regardless of income or circumstance. Since its founding in 1995, the program has provided more than 300 million high-quality, age-appropriate books to children from birth through age five, delivered directly to their homes each month at no cost. This simple yet powerful model removes barriers to book ownership while helping families establish meaningful reading routines during the most important years of a child's brain development.

The program operates through a successful public-private partnership that combines national infrastructure with strong local leadership. Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly created the Imagination Library in her hometown of Sevier County, Tennessee, to inspire a love of reading from the earliest years. In true Dolly fashion, she soon shared that dream with other communities that wanted to give their children the same opportunity to Dream More, Learn More, Care More, and Be More.

Today, the program is made possible through a unique partnership model where funding and support are shared between Dolly, The Dollywood Foundation, and hundreds of Local Community Partners, along with state, provincial, and national partners. Together, these partners help bring books into the homes and hearts of millions of children around the world. This efficient model allows communities to focus on reaching children while benefiting from a proven, scalable literacy initiative.

Recent changes in state funding in Washington State created an unexpected challenge, leaving many Local Program Partners without a sustainable funding plan. Grant support will provide the stability needed to maintain existing programs while building the capacity of Local Program Partners to strengthen and grow their local efforts. Funding will also reduce financial barriers that prevent children from participating and create opportunities to secure additional private investments while working toward restoring state support.

The impact of the Imagination Library is supported by compelling research, demonstrating that receiving as few as ten books leads to measurable improvements in vocabulary, early literacy skills, and family reading habits. The greatest gains are seen in communities facing the highest barriers to educational opportunity, helping close literacy gaps before children begin school.
