Council on Aging of Central Oregon - Bend, Oregon

Caring Connections is a Council on Aging of Central Oregon program that matches a volunteer with an older adult for weekly phone calls or in-person visits.  This no-cost program is an opportunity to meet someone new, discover common interests, and feel more connected to the community.  The program is open to anyone in Central Oregon, age 60 or older who would like to talk with someone regularly.

Loneliness and isolation are more than just fleeing emotions-they can have a profound and far-reaching effects on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of older adults.  Studies have linked prolonged loneliness to increased risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and even mortality.  In a region like Central Oregon, where geographical distances and limited transportation options can exacerbate the feeling of isolation, addressing these issues is paramount. Many older adults find themselves living alone, far from family and friends, with limited opportunities for social interaction and connection.

Caring Connections takes a multifaceted approach to address loneliness and isolation among older adults, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all solution will not suffice.  Through a combination of personalized support, community engagement, and innovative programming, the program aims to create meaningful connections and foster a sense of belonging among the seniors in the region.  In addition, calls/visits often serve as a safety check, providing a peace of mind to seniors and their families.

As we navigate the challenges of aging, programs like Caring Connections remind us of the power of human connection to uplift, support and enrich our lives.  By combating loneliness and fostering meaningful connections, the Council on Aging of Central Oregon and the JTMF Foundation reaffirm our commitment to creating communities where no one must face the challenges of aging alone.
